Deep Cleanings/Periodontal Disease

Periodontal treatment depends upon the type and severity of the disease. As periodontal disease progresses the sulcus between the teeth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque and tartar which in turn causes irritation to the surrounding tissues. When these irritants remain in the pocket spaces they can cause damage to the gums and eventually the bone that supports the teeth.

When the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis and no damage has been done, it will be suggested to have regular check-ups and cleanings throughout the year. Oral hygiene instructions will be given to help you maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

When the disease has progressed to advanced stages of periodontal disease a cleaning called scaling and root planning will be recommended. This is the removal of tartar, plaque and toxins from above and below the gum line, as well as removing the rough spots on the root surgfaces of the tooth. This procedure will help the gum tissue to heal and the pockets to shrink back to normal size. Once your periodontal treatment has been completed regular maintenance cleanings are performed on a three to four month basis.

If you allow periodontal disease to go untreated for long periods of time and you have suffered severe bone loss and your pocket depths are over 8-10mm, we will in most cases refer you to a periodontist who specializes in the area of gum disease.

Good oral hygiene practices and regular periodontal cleanings are essential in maintaining dental health and keeping periodontal disease under control. Ask Dr. Glasscock about the dental aids that can help with your periodontal maintenance program.
